Grease is a liquid when it goes down warm and a solid twenty feet later once it cools against the pipe wall, and each pour narrows the opening a little more until water stops moving through it at all. A cable with a straight or spear-point head breaks through that plug, but if the buildup is heavy along a long run rather than concentrated in one spot, cabling punches a hole through the middle of it and the sides start closing back in within weeks. Where the clog sits right at the trap, pulling the P-trap and clearing it by hand is often faster and cheaper than running a cable at all, and it lets you see exactly what was in there. Where it is further down the branch line, the cable goes in through the fixture or a nearby cleanout instead. Either way, the point is matching the approach to where the blockage actually is rather than defaulting to the same method regardless of what is stuck and where.
